Flowcharting

Ten Basic Rules of Flowcharting

  1. Know your symbols.

  2. Create charts that flow from the top to the bottom of the page.

  3. Don't repeat a destination on a chart.

  4. Chart frames as you would chart navigation bars.

  5. Don't chart Functions

    • Browswer Functions (i.e. "Back" or "Next")
    • Keyboard Functions (i.e. "Esc" or "Enter")
    • or External Links (i.e. Remote Sites).

  6. Every click should have an arrow.

  7. Navigational lines should not intersect.

  8. Try to fit flowcharts on as few pages as possible.

  9. Every project should have balance.

  10. Use the simplest method when flowcharting
