Masking and Selections:

Using the Polygon Lasso tool you can close crop the image and use the quick mask option to edit the selection.

The benefit of using the Quick Mask mode, is that you can edit the selection using Photoshop's drawing and painting tools.

You can toggle between the normal editting mode and quick mask using the toolbar.
